Calming Herbs for Mares
We asked horse training expert Cheyanne West. More about Cheyanne

Question
From: Kelly

Is there a remedy for naturally calming a horse? My mare is terrified of the farrier when he comes out and trimming the hind hooves have been a “train wreck”. She was obviously mistreated in the past. She is a nursing mare (one- month-old filly ). Thanks for any help.

Kelly

Answer
Hi Kelly: Yes there are three different remedies we use for this type of situation. One is a Bach Flower Essence called Recue Remedy. It is also bottled by another company under the name of Calming Essence. Homeopathic remedies include Gelsemium which is for “anticipated anxiety” the type you describe. Another remedy is called Aconite for “sudden anxiety”.

Bach Flower Essences can be used in conjunction with homeopathic remedies. Otherwise a dose of either Aconite or Gelsemium prior to the farriers arrival and again just before he starts to work on her will help and not hurt the baby.

Any of these can be purchased at your local health food store.
