Lame For Months
We asked horse expert Patti Duffy-Salmon. More about Patti.

Hi Patti,
My mare has been lame on her left foreleg for several months. Her x-rays don’t show any bone involvement yet, but there is definite heat in the lower carpus and now I can see a little puffiness. Bayer’s product, LEGEND has been recommended, but is there anything you could recommend to help her knee?

Hi Jan,
Well, this isn’t much information to go on. But I would be concerned that the mare has been lame for several months. I would first find another vet that specializes in lameness issues. Though the x-rays don’t show any bone involvement, there may very well be tendon/ligament involvement instead, which takes a very long time to heal. I can’t guess what this could be, but it could be one of many different things. You could start her off on a glucosamine/MSM type product and see if there is any improvement, but please contact another vet immediately for another opinion. This is always the best course of action.
