I have an aggressive mare, I know or think I know the reason for this. It is because I am not confident in handling her and she has taken to being bossy and aggressive. How can I be more confident around her, which in turn will help me to help her?
Answer
Try spending more time around her without trying to do anything other than be with her. When you do this you need to be far enough away that she does not wish to be aggressive toward you. As she becomes used to having you in her area you can begin to get closer to her, still not trying to do anything, until you can groom her without her taking offense. You might put on a dropped noseband while you are grooming so she cannot bite you. Stay beside her shoulder so you are in a position that she cannot kick you. Once this is working you can start moving her around a little at a time as you are grooming her, staying at her shoulder. The goal is to befriend her in a quiet way that you both enjoy. Good luck.
